12:10 pm Breast Cancer & Restoring Pain-free Activity
When someone is undergoing cancer treatment, physical therapy may not be the first healthcare field that comes to mind. Early cancer treatment is with oncologists, radiologists, nurses and surgeons. Rightly so, as these healthcare practitioners are essential to the treatment and management of cancer. But, is that enough? Physical therapy can help restore the rest.
Cancer rehabilitation is a growing area in medicine due to the increase in cancer survivorship and advances in medical technology, treatment and early detection. Common physical impairments across all cancers include strength loss, range of motion loss, scar tissue, muscle tightness, pain, and more. Lymphedema is also a common side effect with breast cancer as is incontinence with genitourinary cancers.
About Dr. Julie Lombardo, breast cancer survivor and seasoned Wisconsin physical therapist as she shares her personal story. How she is now raising awareness across the state on the importance of physical therapy in the care plan of the breast cancer patient. She holds a strong belief that all survivors should have access to physical therapy to assist them in returning to pain-free, active lives, and she educates survivors that it is never too late to utilize rehabilitation services for cancer recovery.
Speaker: Dr. Julie Lombardo, Capitol Physical Therapy
